Saul Welger 

The NWBA is sad to announce the death of one of it’s “pioneer members”

Saul Welger.  Saul began playing and was a founding member of the fabled Brooklyn Whirlaways (NY) in 1947-48. He competed in his first NWBT
in 1951 and played in every NWBT from 1951 to 1973.
He was also a founding member of the Pan Am Jets (NY) in 1955 and played for their NWBA Championship Team’s in 1956 & 1959.  Saul returned to the Brooklyn Whirlaways in 1964 as a player & later Head Coach up until his  “retirement” in 1995.
During his career he was on the NWBT All-Tourney Team ‘9’ times.
He was on the first two U.S.A. Paralympic Basketball Team’s that represented the U.S. 1960 – Rome Italy & 1964 Tokyo Japan.
In addition he served two terms as NWBA Vice President & Treasurer.
He had also served as NWBA Hall of Fame Chairman from 1976-2001.
During his tenure as HOF Chairman he helped establish the partnership of the NWBA & The James Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Ma.
 
Saul is survived by two children, Diana & Jeff, 5 Grandchildren & his
wife Christa.

Bernie Hengber Memorial All-star Game


Bernie Hengber will long be remembered as one of the most influential people in the history of the Eastern Wheelchair Basketball Conference and the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. His accomplishments during his years of service to wheelchair Basketball are well known to all that either knew him or played ball for him on the legendary Brooklyn Whirlaways.
